Referees

The Pacific Zone is running two referee education training and certification clinics in 2023.

"The Zone’s objective is for all games, except 10u, will have two (2) referees assigned; however, if referee availability is low, and only one (1) referee is assigned, referees will receive 1.5x the above rates." (effective February 27, 2022.)

Compensation (effective May 1, 2022):

  1. Compensation is based on the duration of the quarters

    1. 5-min Qtr. games: $35.00 per game
      6-min Qtr. games: $42.00 per game
      7-min Qtr. games: $49.00 per game


    High-Performance Referees – Top group of referees based on their current performance as evaluated by the USAWP Referee Management Team. They will be on a 3-year cycle in which they must attend events such as ODP Championships and Junior Olympics to receive the necessary evaluations to renew their status. They are also expected to mentor and evaluate less experienced referees. They will receive a $10 premium per game
    Emeritus Referees – Former NCAA and International referees who will be expected to not only whistle games but also mentor and evaluate less experienced referees. They will receive a $5 premium per game.

    10u games will always have one (1) referee assignment and will be compensated at the 5-min Qtr. games: $35.00 per game rate.

Becoming a Referees:

1. Register with USA Water Polo as a "Referee" or "Referee/Coach" Member.

2. Register with USA Water Referee Association (www.arbitersports.com). Registration with USAWPR is free and is mandatory for consideration to USA Water Polo Sanctioned Event Assignments. 

3. Register for and pass the "Basic Certification Tutorial" course, along with the associated test. Make sure to also review the additional rule interpetations and other instructional material prior to taking the test. Click here to register. 

4. Contact your Zone Head Referee to complete the required practical component and/or observation. Pacific Zone Head Referee- Andrew Selder: aselder@usawaterpolo.org 

5.Once you complete your "on deck" observation you are certified as a "Rookie-Level 1" Referee and subject to assignment criteria and limits set forth by your Zone.

6. To achieve "Full Level 1 Certification" please consult your Zone Head Referee for practical criteria.

 

Returning Referees:

1. Register with USA Water Polo as a "Referee" or "Referee/Coach" Member. 

2. Register for and pass the "Basic Certification Tutorial" class, along with the associated rules test. 

Attend and successfully complete a USAWPR Referee School and any testing required. These schools will be offered in conjunction with USAWP and ODP events throughout the country. A schedule of USAWPR Referee Schools will be posted here

3. Contact your Zone Head Referee to complete the required "practical" portion of your re-certification and advancement requirements. Complete Level Certification Criteria is posted on the usawaterpolo.org website.
